Politically, it can be a punchbag.
But we love it. It is one of the best examples of Ethical Influencer we know. And here's why:
Their reason for being is to provide healthcare to anyone normally resident in the UK that is free at the point of use. That's a pretty ethical goal.
Whatever you'e doing in your day, whatever is occupying your time, the NHS is always there. It never quits.
One of the founding princieples of the NHS was to "meet the
needs of everyone". That's a brave goal, however you look at
it.
The NHS provides free emergency-based care to all people within UK borders.
Our brave girls and boys returning from the front-line are treated and rehabilitated by the NHS.
Fighting their "nanny state" tag, the NHS continues to provide the best use of funds by promoting healthy lifestyles and prevention rather than cure. And we all benefit from that.
The NHS really tries. It wants to do good things for people.
People working in the NHS take it very seriously.
Aneurin Bevan, the Secretary of State for Health who introduced the NHS as we know it, believed that it was absolutely the right thing to do. Not the easy thing. Probably not a very popular thing, at the time. But the right thing.
The NHS promotes education in health which affect our everyday
lives, including the spread of infection through unwashed hands,
and recognising symptoms of major conditions like stroke (F.A.S.T)
and cancer.
So, yes, they get it wrong sometimes. The money never goes far enough. There are inefficencies that everyone inside and outside the NHS can see. But anyone that sets out goals that big deserves respect. And that's why we ♥ the NHS.
